Working principle
A multistage pump is a type of centrifugal pump that uses multiple impellers connected in series to increase liquid pressure. When the prime mover directly drives the multi-stage pump through the elastic coupling, its rotating pump starts to work and the impeller starts to rotate. Due to the high-speed rotation of the impeller, the liquid is thrown around the impeller under the action of centrifugal force, thereby increasing the pressure and speed of the liquid. These liquids then enter the guide vanes, which convert part of the kinetic energy into potential energy and transport the liquid to the inlet of the next stage impeller. After being pressurized by the multi-stage impeller, the pressure of the liquid is significantly increased and is finally discharged through the outlet.
Types of Multistage Pumps
Multistage pumps are typically categorized by their construction and the way the impellers are arranged:
Vertical Multistage Pumps: In these pumps, the impellers are stacked vertically. These are typically used in applications where space is limited or where a high-pressure, compact design is required. They are often used in high-rise buildings, water treatment, and industrial applications.

Horizontal Multistage Pumps: These pumps have a horizontal shaft, and the impellers are arranged along the axis. They are commonly used in applications requiring high flow rates and are often used for water supply, boiler feedwater, or pressure boosting in large systems.

Applications of Multistage Pumps
Multistage pumps are used in a variety of applications where high-pressure delivery is necessary. Common applications include:
Boiler Feed Water Systems: In industrial applications like power plants, multistage pumps are used to feed water to boilers at high pressures.
High-Pressure Cleaning: Multistage pumps are often used in pressure washing and industrial cleaning applications, where a high and consistent water pressure is required.
3.Water Supply Systems: For applications requiring water to be pumped over long distances or to higher elevations, multistage pumps are ideal. They are often used in municipal water supply systems, particularly in high-rise buildings or in systems that need to overcome significant head losses.
4.Irrigation: In agricultural irrigation, especially for large-scale projects, multistage pumps can provide the necessary pressure to distribute water efficiently over large areas.
Desalination: Multistage pumps are used in reverse osmosis desalination plants to pressurize seawater for filtration.
Advantages of Multistage Pumps
Higher Pressure Output: The primary advantage of multistage pumps is their ability to generate high pressure. Each additional stage allows the pump to increase the pressure in small increments, making it suitable for applications requiring high-pressure output.
Energy Efficiency: While multistage pumps are more complex than single-stage pumps, they are more energy-efficient when high pressures are required because they avoid the need for overly large impellers, which can be inefficient.
Compact Design: Multistage pumps can be designed to achieve high pressure in a relatively compact space compared to a single-stage pump that would require a much larger impeller to achieve similar results.
Versatility: They can be used for a wide range of fluids, including clean water, chemicals, and liquids with low to medium viscosity, depending on the materials and design.
Multiple Uses: Multistage pumps can be designed with different configurations to suit various applications, from domestic water supply to large industrial systems.
